The Telephone Museum of Atlanta

Tribute to these telephones which were only used for telephoning.

Finding a route in a city 7000 km away, making a videoconference with Japan, playing colorful games in the metro, it’s all possible thanks to our current phones. But the phones of yesterday, those huge handsets hanging on the walls, those phone booths with retractable aerials that didn’t fit in any pocket, who remembers them? Anyone who visits the Telephone Museum in Atlanta, the museum of the very first telephones. Hello (rs), are we waiting for you?

A small but well-stocked museum

Man went through different phases to communicate, smoke signals, carrier pigeons, messengers on horseback, handwritten letters… Revolution in the world of communications, the phone appeared in 1876, and allowed the human voice to travel!

The very first attempts appeared in 1664, when the physicist Robert Hooke presented a patent for an acoustic telephone with a stretched cable, an idea then taken up in the 18th century with the acoustic tube (ancestor of an intercom). Officially recognized as the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell would however have been preceded by the Italian Antonio Meucci.

Anyway, the telephone made its appearances in 1977, in the United States and 2 years later in France, and today 2 Americans in 3 have a cell phone. The Telephone Museum d’Atlanta traces this revolution in communication and relationships in a beautiful, fairly complete museum.

All of the facilities are designed to provide you with an enjoyable visit, pointing to the enormous evolution from the very first big phone models to the tiny devices that inhabit every pocket these days.

It is better to stay with the youngest in order to explain to them how certain handsets work and to interest them in exhibitions, or it is your phone that they will ask to take care of …
