The accident resulted in one death. The head of security of the province of Buenos Aires, Sergio Berni, said one victim died of a heart attack.

“Unfortunately one person died. He died of a heart attack when he wanted to be transferred to the hospital,” Berni said.

The outnumbered police decided to fire rubber bullets and tear gas. The tear gas was then blown into the stadium and caused chaos in the Gimansia-Boca match.

“My 2 year old son can’t breathe. We are all resigned and worried about the people in the stands. It’s crazy. We had a normal football match, and it all went like this, feeling the people closest to us almost dead”, said Gimnasia player Leonardo Morales.

No Boca Juniors fans were present in the incident. The Buenos Aires government has banned visiting fans from attending all away matches since 2013 due to frequent clashes.

This incident occurred less than a week after the Kanjuruhan tragedy which killed 131 people.
