The rampage in the shopping center in Australia could not have been an act of terrorism, MTI reports following the announcement of the local police on Sunday.

A man stabbed six people to death and wounded eight others at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Saturday. In the meantime, the perpetrator shot by law enforcement agencies was identified as a 40-year-old man suffering from psychological problems.

According to the New South Wales State Police, the motive of the culprit, Joel Cauchi from Queensland, could not have been terrorism. Anthony Cooke, New South Wales deputy chief of police, emphasized that they do not yet have any information that the perpetrator had any special motive, or that he might have been driven by some ideology. According to Cooke, Cauchi arrived in the territory of the member state in March. He said authorities have already spoken with his family members, who are cooperating.

“We know that the offender had psychological issues,” Cooke said. He added that the condition of several victims of the stabbing attack, including a nine-month-old baby, is serious but stable. According to press reports, the child’s mother is also among the dead.
