The Swiss make their smartphone last longer

The number of people in Switzerland who want to keep their smartphone for four years or more has increased, according to a Comparis survey. The iPhone remains the most used device, ahead of Samsung’s.

The Swiss are willing to spend more on the purchase of a smartphone but want to keep it longer, according to a study (archives).

The share of people who intend to use their smartphone for four years or more has increased from 32.8% in 2019 to 39.1% in 2021, said the online comparator Thursday in a press release. This desire is particularly marked among the oldest people (50.6% of those 56 and over). Conversely, it is lowest among 18-35 year olds (31.1%).

Less than half of those surveyed (44.4%) plan to acquire a new smartphone in the next 12 months, a figure down sharply compared to 2019 (57.1%).

Young people willing to spend more

“This is not a temporary slowdown in sales of new devices due to the coronavirus, but a fundamental trend. People are willing to spend more for the purchase of a new smartphone, but less often, ”said Jean-Claude Frick, digital expert at Comparis, quoted in the press release.

This is reflected in particular in the proportion of people willing to spend more than 800 francs for a new device, which rose from 12.1% in 2019 to 21.9% in 2021. It is especially the youngest who are ready to untie their purse strings. 17.2% of 18-35 year olds want to spend between 800 and 999 francs against 11.9% of 56 year olds and over.

Men are also willing to spend more than women. The share of the latter loans to pay between 800 and 100 francs for a smartphone and 15.7% against 12.5% for women. They are even almost twice as numerous (10.1%) as women (5.5%) to buy a telephone of the most expensive category (more than 1000 francs).

IPhone popular among young people

The iPhone remains the most used type of device (46.6%), followed by those of Samsung (32.5%). Huawei completes the podium (9.6%). The iPhone is particularly popular with younger people, more than half of 18-35 years old (52.9%) owning an Apple brand device.

To explain this success, Mr. Frcik mentions the fact that the iPhone is one of the most famous brands in the world, which “continues to exercise a strong power of attraction” on young users but also the fact that applications are available faster on the iPhone.

IPhones are also more than twice as popular as Android phones in the second-hand market. However, the latter only represents a small portion of purchases. Less than one in ten (9.2%) had a used phone.

The representative survey was carried out by the polling and market research institute innofact on behalf of comparis.ch among a sample of 2,042 people from all regions of Switzerland. The survey took place in October 2021.
