Frankfurt, New York Will we be able to fly from London to Miami in just five hours in a few years? Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of the US company Boom, is convinced of this. Obviously also some airline operators. American Airlines recently ordered 20 jets of the planned Overture supersonic plane from Boom. United Airlines and Japan Airlines have already placed orders there as well.

So is supersonic civil aviation about to return after the Concorde went extinct in 2003? One thing is certain: Since the American Airlines promotional announcement, the prospects that the jet boom will ever be mass-produced and take off have worsened rather than improved. After Rolls-Royce, Boom’s engine partner, is gone, the plane is missing the most important part: the engine. And that’s not the only problem with the superfast plane.
