The 4-year-old who died in Joensuu Milo– the boy’s stepfather Sebastian Halonen the lawyer has submitted a petition to the Court of Appeal of Eastern Finland, which is a counter-appeal to the complaint of the boy’s grandmother. Halonen requests that the Court of Appeal reduce the prison sentence he was sentenced to.

Halonen’s mind about the complaint has changed over the past month or so. On March 6, Halonen’s lawyer, deputy judge Jaakko Koponen said that Halonen is satisfied with his sentence.

According to Koponen, Halonen decided to appeal his sentence because the parties concerned, i.e. the biological father and grandmother of the dead son Milo, have also appealed against the sentence.

– I can’t say more about it, Koponen tells Iltalehte.

7 years 9 months

At the end of February, the District Court of Northern Karelia sentenced Halonen, 26, to seven years and nine months in prison. His punishment was aggravated assault and aggravated manslaughter.

According to Halonen’s counter-complaint, the punishment he was sentenced to is not in fair proportion to the harmfulness and dangerousness of the act, the motives of the act and other culpability arising from the crime.

According to Halonen, the district court had wrongly sentenced him to a very harsh punishment for aggravated assault. According to him, the punishment is unreasonably harsh.

Halonen states that his procedure does not differ so substantially from typical aggravated assault that the general jurisprudence could be deviated from in this way.

The sentence handed down to Halones approximates the average sentence for those convicted of intentional homicide, which is about nine years in prison.

According to Halonen, he had not intended or considered it likely that the boy would die as a result of his actions. Halonen considers that this is also clear in terms of the reasoning of the district court.

Others complained too

Also Milo’s mother Muse Rissanen, 22, has appealed against the district judgement. He demands to be released immediately and that the charge of aggravated manslaughter be dismissed.

District Attorney Osmo Manninen on the other hand, demands that Rissanen be sentenced to a total of about five years in prison for aggravated assault in addition to aggravated manslaughter.

The biological father demands that Rissanen be convicted of aggravated assault or that the punishment be increased. In addition, he demands compensation from Rissase.

Rissanen’s mother, i.e. Milo’s grandmother, demands compensation from Halo.

According to the court’s assessment, Milo most likely died because Halonen had burned him with a steam mop – i.e. with hot steam. The child was found lifeless in his own bed in the morning.

Iltalehti has received from the victim’s biological father through a lawyer permission to tell the boy’s name.
