“The start of the school year promises to be catastrophic”: teachers’ strike movement in the east of Val-d’Oise

After strike movements in March and April, reaching up to 95% of the workforce on certain dates, around ten establishments in the east of Val-d’Oise are once again mobilized to demand “additional working hours for priority education “, this Tuesday, May 31, with strike rates of between 30 and 70%, according to the Sud Éducation 95 union. The Saint-Exupéry, Martin Luther King and Léon Blum colleges in Villiers-le-Bel, Jean -Lurçat in Sarcelles and Henri-Wallon and in Garges-lès-Gonesse are particularly concerned.

Teachers are worried about the numbers for the 2022-2023 school year. “As every year, we lose hours on the overall hourly allocation (Editor’s note: the number of teaching hours allocated by National Education to colleges and high schools), which risks increasing the number of our classes” , they lament. “The start of the school year promises to be catastrophic. In priority education, these figures are not only scandalous: they are anti-pedagogical and represent a declaration of war”, they even indicate in their press release.

Classes of 20 or 22 students desired

“At Saint-Exupéry, classes will exceed 27/28 students, in rooms that will not be adapted for good working conditions. In Martin-Luther-King, sixth-grade classes risk increasing to 30 students and more,” illustrates Noé Roland, librarian teacher and representative of Sud Education 95 in Saint-Exupéry. “We also have all the liabilities of the health crisis, our students have even more difficulties than before,” he points out.

The strikers are calling for classes of 20 or 22 students in the Priority Education Network: “We could move faster! The students themselves have been asking for it since they tested the small groups during the Covid period”. “We feel a deterioration in the school climate. It is more and more difficult to conduct our sessions, to complete our programs, in relation to this too large number of students, ”continues the trade unionist.

National Education recruitment operation in Cergy

They are also calling for “massive recruitment of staff, in particular principal education adviser, educational assistant, support for students with disabilities, localized units for inclusive education and educational units for incoming allophone students” and “the tenure of all the precarious staff of 95 “.

This Tuesday, precisely, the job dating operation of the Versailles Academy to recruit future contract teachers, in partnership with Pôle emploi and Apec, was held at the Alfred-Kastler high school in Cergy. Some 200 kindergarten and elementary positions are to be filled for the start of the 2022 school year in Val-d’Oise – in Argenteuil, Cergy but also… Villiers-le-Bel and Sarcelles! -, 150 teaching positions in colleges and high schools and 150 accompanying students with disabilities. ” I’m not surprised. In Île-de-France, the recruitment figures are very low, which poses a problem, especially in maths,” notes Noé Roland.

Finally, the professors want “an end to the liberal reforms of the Macron-Blanquer era”. After their local mobilization, they will therefore go to the Ministry of National Education as part of the national mobilization, to challenge the new Minister Pap Ndiaye on the issue of Priority Education. “A delegation of six people working in the east of the department will be received at the ministry this afternoon,” they announce with satisfaction.

Contacted, the rectorate of the academy of Versailles did not wish to react, referring to the ministry. François Pupponi (Modem), the MP for the 8th constituency, said he had checked the number of hours allocated. “I am reassured by the fact that these establishments were over-staffed compared to others as they are in priority education. The problem comes from the assessments of the number of students we will have in September, ”he says. He nevertheless intervened with the firm “to support them in their request”.
