The SFRS invites you to remember about fire safety in your home when working remotely

Due to the state of emergency declared in the country, most residents work and study remotely and spend a lot of time in housing. In order to prevent work and training at home from turning into a fire accident, the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) calls on residents to be careful and take care of fire safety in the home!

Always pay attention to the food on the switched on stove!

When cooking on the stove, we often sit at the computer, continue the work, quickly run to the store or lie down in the next room without noticing how the food burns. At best, the consequences of such an action will be only a burning pot and rooms that smell like fire, but at worst, the occupants of the house will suffer from smoke. Household items and kitchen furniture can also catch fire due to heat.

If food is burning in a pan or pot, do not use water for extinguishing, as hot fumes will be generated which can scald. Switch off the hob and put the lid on the burning container to prevent oxygen from entering the burning area! Ventilate the rooms!

What you need to know about electrical safety at home

In our daily work at home, we make extensive use of various electrical devices, such as computers, tablets and smartphones. Unfortunately, calls related to incorrect operation of electrical equipment are very common, so SFRS calls to follow the instructions for use of the equipment, including:
– do not operate defective electrical equipment, even if minor damage is visible,
– regularly remove dust from all electrical appliances,
– do not leave heat-emitting devices, such as an iron or toaster, on,
– do not leave electrical appliances plugged in when leaving the house,
– Keep flammable substances away from electrical appliances.

In the event of an electrical appliance catching fire, never extinguish the flames with water! First, unplug the appliance, then cover it with a thick, non-synthetic cloth or fire blanket! If possible, remove the electrical appliance from the premises.

Use caution when heating the oven!

Taking care of the heat in the home, make sure that the heating equipment is in working order! Improper use of this equipment is one of the most common causes of fires, so do not forget to follow the fire safety rules:
– no damaged heating equipment or chimneys are used,
– regularly clean the soot from the flue,
– fuel and other combustible materials are placed no closer than 1.2 meters from the door of the heating installation,
– do not heat heating appliances with firewood longer than the size of the furnace,
– do not place flammable objects near heating appliances, such as drying clothes and shoes on the oven or fireplace.

Smoke detector can save lives!

To detect a fire accident in time, install a smoke detector in your home! Most often, people suffer or die in fires not from flames, but by inhaling smoke, because they do not notice the fire in time. A smoke detector, which warns of the formation of smoke by means of an audible signal, makes it possible to detect danger and escape from a dangerous environment.

The SFRS reminds that smoke detectors must be installed in all dwellings – both apartments and private houses, but private houses must be additionally provided with a fire extinguisher!

However, if an accident occurs and the help of the operational services is required, call 112 immediately!
