The Seismic Network adjusts to 5.0 the magnitude of the tremor felt in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rico Seismic Network adjusted to 5.0 the magnitude of the tremor that was generated today at 10:45 a.m. 17.16 kilometers south-southeast of Guánica.

There is no warning or threat of tsunami for Puerto Rico.

According to the entity, the epicenter had a depth of 7 kilometers and was reported as felt throughout the island.

The Seismic Network reported that the movement had an intensity of VI in Ponce.

This implies that structures that were affected prior to this will receive additional damage. It was of a preliminary intensity of six“, said the director of the entity, Víctor Huérfano, in a radio interview (WKAQ – 580 AM).

This is the most recent earth movement with a magnitude of 5 or more that is generated at the Punta Montalva fault south of Guánica and has been active since last December 28.

After the earth movement, the mayor of Peñuelas, Gregory González Souchet, ordered that the main roads of the municipality be reviewed and possible damage assessed.

“So far, I have no news,” Gonzalez Souceht said in an interview with The new dayat 11:10 a.m.

For his part, the director of Emergency Management in Ponce, Ángel Vázquez, indicated that, at the moment, there are no developments related to the earthquake.

“The Municipal Police are reviewing the structures in the urban area to see if there are visible landslides”said Vazquez.

Why does the reported magnitude of an earthquake change? Know the answer here.

With this movement the window opens to a new seismic activity as part of the release of energy between the tectonic plates.

In an interview with The new dayOrphan had anticipated that scientists have not been able to conclude, for sure, why the constant seismic activity that has been developing south since December 28. However, the analyzes conclude that the tremors will continue to occur and their intensity could vary since, at the moment, there is no exact pattern between the magnitudes of the earthquakes.

Like the Seismic Network, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) anticipated that the aftershocks could persist after the 6.4 earthquake on January 7 of this year, for “years or decades.”

“This sequence is very active, and the odds of replicas of magnitude 5 and 6 or greater remain high now and in the future,” the agency said in its report.
