The Science and Benefits of Therapeutic Blood Donation: Ancient Method Explained

A method known in ancient times

In former times, this procedure was classified as a secret science, but it continues to be successfully used today in the treatment of many diseases. We are talking about therapeutic blood donation – bloodletting. Rheumatologist, neurologist, academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Russian Federation, author of books on health Pavel Evdokimenko explained what effect the procedure has on the body from the point of view of science and scientific research, about the benefits and harms of the procedure.

During the procedure, a certain amount of venous blood is removed from the vein, which leads to a rapid drop in pressure (by 10−20%) and an increase in the difference between venous and arterial pressure. At the same time, heart contractions increase, which eliminates cardiovascular failure.

After a few minutes, blood pressure also decreases. In healthy people – by 8-10 units, and the effect lasts 2-8 hours. In hypertensive patients, blood pressure decreases even more.

“Often we can get simply amazing results. If it was, say, 200/120, it may drop to 140/90. It was 160/90 – we get 130/80,” the doctor clarifies.

Also, after the procedure, hydremia occurs – blood thinning, as water begins to enter the blood from various cells of the body. At the same time, water removes intracellular decay products and intracellular toxins from these cells, due to which they are cleansed and rejuvenated. Next, the toxins, along with the bloodstream, enter the kidneys and are eliminated from the body on the same day.

So, on the day of the procedure, excess nitrogen, metabolic breakdown products, excess cholesterol and uric acid leave the body, and blood viscosity decreases by 20-30%. The patients’ well-being improves markedly.

According to the doctor, women of childbearing age regularly lose blood due to menstruation, so they rarely suffer from high blood pressure. They should not bleed. The procedure is useful for menopausal women and men over 25 years of age.

“Bleeding should be done no more than once a month. Or once every 2 months. After four to five bloodlettings, you need to take a break for recovery – at least three months. In total, no more than 6 bloodlettings can be done per year,” Evdokimenko clarifies.

There are many contraindications to the procedure: low hemoglobin, low hematocrit, hypotension, severe advanced atherosclerosis, severe heart defects, open injuries, age under 20 and over 70 years, recent flu, sore throat or severe colds, postoperative period and others. The procedure is carried out only in a clinic according to a doctor’s indications; consult a specialist.

“Therapeutic blood donation, or phlebotomy, is an excellent method of treating many diseases. Bloodletting is especially helpful in treating hypertension and reducing high cholesterol,” sums up the doctor.
