The Safety of Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer During Pregnancy – Expert Insights from Professor Humaid bin Harmal Al Shamsi

Professor Humaid bin Harmal Al Shamsi, Rapporteur of the Gulf Oncology Society, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Oncology Society, and Consultant Medical Oncologist, stated that breast cancer occurs approximately once in every 3,000 pregnancies, and most often in women between the ages of 32 and 38 years, pointing out the possibility of Chemotherapy is used after surgery as an adjuvant treatment for some early stages of breast cancer, and it can also be used alone in more advanced cancer cases.

Al-Shamsi told Al-Bayan: “Chemotherapy is not given during the first three months of pregnancy, because a large part of the child’s growth process occurs during this time, and the safety of chemotherapy in the first three months has not been studied. “The risk of miscarriage is also the greatest during this time.”

He added: “For many years, it was believed that all types of chemotherapy would harm the fetus, regardless of when it was given. But studies have shown that some chemical medications, such as (doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, fluorouracil, and taxanes) used during the second and third trimesters (months 4 to 9 of pregnancy) do not increase the risk of birth defects, stillbirth, health problems, or post-natal problems. Giving birth too soon, although it may increase the risk of premature birth.”

Professor Al Shamsi pointed out that “when treating a pregnant woman with breast cancer, the goal is the same as when treating a non-pregnant woman, so the goal is to treat as much as possible,” pointing to a birth case in which the mother contracted breast cancer during pregnancy, and her health condition prompted her to take chemotherapy in a regular manner. It was quick to control the disease without affecting the fetus, which came out healthy despite being placed in the premature ward for several weeks due to its young age.
