The Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, has embarked on its highly anticipated seven-day maiden voyage. The ship set sail from Port Miami, embarking on a captivating island-hopping journey before returning to its starting point.
Setting a Magnificent Sail
Valued at a staggering $2 billion, the Icon of the Seas features an impressive 365-meter long frame, spanning 20 decks and accommodating 7,600 passengers. With a crew of 2,350, the ship promises to offer an extraordinary experience on its voyage.
Unbeatable Luxuries and Amenities
As passengers set foot on the Icon of the Seas, they are greeted by a level of opulence beyond compare. The ship boasts 40 dining venues and bars, 7 swimming pools (including a 40,000-gallon ‘lake’), a 55ft artificial waterfall, and a diverse selection of entertainers including 50 musicians and comedians, as well as a 16-piece orchestra. The ship’s architectural marvel, ‘The Pearl,’ is a dynamic art installation that adds to the overall grandeur.
Environmentalist Concerns
While Royal Caribbean claims that the Icon of Seas is powered by ‘eco-friendly Liquefied Natural Gas,’ environmentalists express apprehension regarding the ship’s potential methane emissions. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas and a major contributor to climate warming, is considered a substantial environmental risk by these critics.
According to research funded by the International Council of Clean Transportation, LNG-fueled ships like the Icon have an average methane slip of 6.4 percent, exceeding the International Maritime Organization’s assumption of 3.5 percent. The leakage of methane occurs during the combustion process, where low-pressure, dual-fuel engines are used. The concerns raised by environmentalists indicate that the ship’s emissions may be higher than those produced by traditional marine fuel.
Positive Response from Royal Caribbean
Despite environmental concerns, Royal Caribbean remains optimistic and emphasizes its commitment to scrutinizing energy efficiency and emission reduction. The cruise line enforces a rigorous assessment of every kilowatt used on the Icon to ensure optimal energy efficiency.
The Royal Caribbean International President and CEO, Michael Bayley, expressed delight in the ship’s features and capabilities, labeling it the largest and most impressive vessel that has ever been built.
Caribbean Adventures Await
Unfazed by environmental allegations, the Icon of the Seas is set to continue its Caribbean voyages from Miami. The itineraries ensure exquisite experiences for travelers, featuring incredible destinations and a stop at the award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.
The ship’s star-studded naming ceremony saw soccer legend Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates christening the vessel. Messi expressed his privilege at taking part in the event, which adds to the grand story surrounding the Icon of the Seas.
