The Romanian defense minister resigns after comments on the war in Ukraine

Jakarta

Ministry of Defense Romania Vesile Dincu withdrew. Dincu resigned after commenting on the Ukraine-Russia war that drew much criticism.

He resigned after facing a wave of criticism for claiming that the war in Ukraine could only end through peace talks with Russia. Vesile Dincu has announced his retirement from social networks.

“The impossibility of collaborating with the president” were some of the quotes written in his resignation letter.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis publicly condemned Dincu for his comments on Ukraine earlier this month, saying “only Ukraine can decide when and what to negotiate”.

“This is our official position and some officials in our country should read the media more often to find out,” he told reporters.

The comments came just days after Dincu, a trade sociologist, said in a televised interview “the only chance for peace is to negotiate with Russia”.

Dincu was also criticized by the leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and summoned by Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca last week when the opposition demanded his resignation.

“My resignation is necessary so as not to hinder the decision-making process … and a number of projects are absolutely necessary for the optimal functioning of the Romanian army,” Dincu said in his resignation on Monday.
