The Rise of Anies Baswedan’s Electability in East Java: A Result of Collaboration with Muhaimin Iskandar

Jakarta

Communications observer from Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) Serpong Ambang Priyonggo said the results of the Politika Research and Consulting (PRC) survey after Anies Baswedan collaborated with Muhaimin Iskandar were not surprising.

The survey noted that Anies’ level of electability increased significantly in September 2023 after the declaration of the Anies-Muhaimin pair.

In the survey, Anies’ electability in East Java soared. The number rose to more than 18% after the declaration of Cawapres Cak Imin. And an increase compared to the position in April 2023 which was 14 percent to 18.3 percent in September 2023.

“The key in East Java is indeed through the nahdliyin or Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). In this context, Gus Muhaimin’s role is fitting, because Cak Imin as the founder of NU KH. Bisri Syansuri and the National Awakening Party (PKB) is recognized or not as a representation “politics are among the nahdliyin, especially in East Java,” said Ambang in a written statement, Sunday (17/9/2023).

“In fact, PKB is the voice of the nahdliyin, so there is great potential for Anies and Muhaimin to be able to gain the voice of the nahdliyin,” explained the doctor of Communication Sciences from the University of Malaya, Malaysia.

In contrast to Anies’ rising electability, the results of the PRC survey show that Prabowo and Ganjar’s electability in East Java fell after the declaration of the pair Anies and Gus Muhaimin (AMIN) in East Java. According to Ambang, this cannot be separated from the PKB and Cak Imin factors.

“But to what extent the upward trend will continue, we have to see and pay close attention in the future,” he said.

Ambang revealed that Cak Imin was the deciding factor. Because from the start his figure was supported and predicted by kiai and large Islamic boarding schools in East Java to contest in the 2024 presidential election, even long before he was paired with Anies.

“Many kiai and Islamic boarding schools in East Java supported Muhaimin from the start. And in Nahdliyin, the patron-client phenomenon is very strong. The students will obey their role model kiai, Samina wa Athona. Moreover, Anies has also gone around to Islamic boarding schools and sowan to kiai throughout East Java and was well received,” he said.

For information, in this survey Prabowo Subianto’s electability dropped from 40.5 percent as of April 2023 to just 32.3 percent (September 2023). The same decline occurred for Ganjar Pranowo, from 40.8 percent (April 2023) to 40.4 percent (September 2023).

This survey was attended by a total of 1,200 respondents with a response rate of 100%. Meanwhile, the margin of error for the survey was 2.7 percent.

Respondents who answered they didn’t know or didn’t answer increased from 4.8 percent to 9 percent. This is in line with the comparison of the popularity trends of the three presidential candidates’ names between April 2023 compared to September 2023.

Prabowo fell from 94.8 percent to 93.6 percent, Ganjar fell from 78.7 percent to 77.3 percent, while Anies rose from 80.4 percent to 82 percent.
