the right keeps the levers comfortably, the ecologists make their entrance

The right can claim victory, as here in Tourcoing, where the only minister in the running, Gérald Darmanin, largely won alongside Doriane Becue and the pair Ledoux – Tonnerre. PHOTO PIERRE LE MASSON

A very strong abstention

It had climbed to 69.61% in the first round, preventing any election as early as last Sunday, the percentage of 25% registered not being reached anywhere. For this second round, abstention remained just as high in the North, at 68.99%.

The winning addition of Jean-René Lecerf

18 + 3 + 3 … The addition was made by Jean-René Lecerf just after the first lap. The outgoing president counted on the fact that the Union for the North (UPN), its majority group of right and various right in the departmental council, would emerge from these elections with a comfortable advance. The second round of this Sunday proved him right.

Out of 41 cantons, the right and center-right won 25 (i.e. 30 elected for the Union of the Right, 10 various right, 8 center and right, 2 various centers), or much more than half, ensuring a large majority of elected officials (we will find in passing a Gérald Darmanin confirmed with his partner Doriane Becue by 64.8% of the votes in his canton of Tourcoing 2).

Better: Christian Poiret (UD), already vice-president of the outgoing assembly and designated successor of the outgoing president wins in his canton of Douais, ensuring except huge surprise the succession of Jean-René Lecerf.

Something to console the latter for the defeat at Valenciennes of the pair he supported, namely Geneviève Mannarino and Yves Dusart (UPN), opposed in a fratricidal duel to the duo Valérie Létard – Laurent Degallaix (LR-UDI-MR).

The left in retreat, the ecologists enter the council

Present in the second round this Sunday in 23 cantons (10 cantons more than in 2015), the left-wing, communist and environmentalist pairs won 16 cantons. The PC resisted in its strongholds of Hainaut (Aulnoye-Aymeries and Aulnoye-les-Valenciennes), sending 4 elected to the departmental council and beating the candidates of the RN in the process. The Union of the left will send 18 elected officials, the various left 4 elected, the Union to the left with ecologists 2, the PS none … It is in the cantons of Lille that the most bitter struggles were fought, the environmentalists EELV having qualified for the second round in the cantons of Lille3 and Lille 5. The latter will in fact send four elected officials to the departmental council., the Céline Scavennec and Simon Jamelin duo having won in the canton of Lille 3 against the PS and the Anne Mikolajczak / Maël Guiziou duo winning in the canton of Lille 5 again against the PS.

RN makes white cabbage

Although in the lead in number of votes in absolute terms in the first round (23.11%), the RN was present in 20 cantons for this second round (significantly less than in 2015, where it was present in the second round. in 38 cantons). This time, however, he did not exceed 16.1% of the vote. Marine Le Pen’s party will not send any elected to the Northern Departmental Council.

The party lost all its duels as well with the left (as in Dunkirk, Aniche, Aulnoye-Aymeries, Roubaix, Sin-le-Noble), as with the right (as in Caudry, Fourmies, Marly, Hazebrouck, Orchies, Maubeuge …).

The victory did not even come from the symbolic canton of Denain, that of Sébastien Chenu, the head of the RN list for the regional ones. The RN made 45.98% of the vote, its best score this Sunday, beaten by the Union of the Left.
