Biggest outliers in income of the self-employed in healthcare NOW

The largest outliers in the income of the self-employed can be found in health and welfare care. On the high side, it is not surprising that medical specialists, general practitioners and dentists are involved. At the bottom are employees in, for example, youth care, physiotherapists and speech therapists.

According to figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), the income of the self-employed per sector was examined. The number of people earning money as a self-employed person increased enormously in the period from 2007 to 2018, from 260,000 to 1.3 million.

Looking at all professional groups, the average income of the self-employed in business services was the greatest. These are professions as a consultant, architect or engineer. “Service providers who provide their services to companies”, explains chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen of Statistics Netherlands. The average income in trade and care was 30,000 and 31,000 euros respectively.

The number of self-employed people also increased the most in business services, by 78,000. But also in the construction industry (plus 56,000) and healthcare (55,000) the number of independent entrepreneurs grew considerably. On the contrary, there was a contraction in agriculture, forestry and fishing.
