Eurelian gendarmes warn drivers about the return of an old scam: the rear-view mirror scam. The latter was observed this week in the department.
The procedure consists of making a motorist, preferably a senior, believe that he has hung up, and therefore damaged, a rear-view mirror. The villain shows the victim the broken mirror in his rearview mirror that he deliberately smashed a few moments earlier.
A cash arrangement
The scammer cunning and pretends to phone his insurer (an accomplice, who announces an exorbitant amount of compensation to the victim, using carefully prepared arguments to panic the victim).
The scammer then proposes an amicable settlement, in cash to avoid the motorist of the penalty. The objective is to extort the species from the victim.

The gendarmerie advises to always write a report, not to give cash to settle the dispute, to contact your own insurance by dialing the number, and in case of conflict or doubt, to dial 17. And to collect as much information as possible (license plate, type of car, description of individuals, etc.).
