The paving and foundations of a 2,000-year-old Roman villa were unearthed on Tuesday in the municipality of Negrar di Valpolicella, in the region of Verona (Italy), reports Le Figaro. The mosaics, which date from the first century AD, are in remarkable condition according to photos posted on Facebook by the municipality.

The location of antiques under these vines has been known since the end of the 19th century. Other remains from the same era had been discovered in the same place. They are now on display at the Archaeological Museum of the Teatro Romano in Verona, specifies the Corriere della Sera Quoted by Le Figaro. New research had started last October, but it had come to nothing. However,
archaeologists had been able to delimit the dimensions of the house which was under the
vines. All that remained was to dig.

Unearth all the remains

“The technicians of the superintendent of Verona, thanks to a targeted coring of the soil, partially discover the remains of the artifact still present under a few meters of earth, with a precise objective: to identify the exact extension and the exact location of the old building, “said the town in its Facebook message.

The city of Negrar now wants to complete the project. She is determined to bring “all the necessary collaboration” to the superintendent and the owners of the land. “The result will not arrive any time soon and significant resources will be needed,” the municipality said in its message.
