Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Coordinator of Expert Team and Government Spokesperson for Handling Covid-19, Prof. Wiku Adisasmito said, the Red and White vaccine made by Airlangga University (Unair) Surabaya entered pre-clinical trials on large animals. Once successful, it will be continued with clinical trials, namely injections into volunteers.
Even though it is still in the pre-clinical trial process, Wiku confirmed that the Red and White vaccine made by the nation’s children will be included in the government’s vaccination program.
“The Red and White Vaccine will still be included in the government’s vaccination program,” Wiku said at an online press conference entitled; “Development of Covid-19 Handling in Indonesia”, Tuesday (18/5/2021).
Previously, the Spokesperson for the Government for Vaccination from Bio Farma, Bambang Heriyanto said, the development of vaccines for the nation’s children, namely Red and White vaccine so far done by 7 platforms including; Eijkman Institute of Molecular Biology (LBM), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Padjadjaran University (Unpad), University of Indonesia (UI), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Airlangga University (Unair), and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI).
However, said Bambang, of the 7 platforms, the development of vaccines from LBM Eijkman and Unair which have produced vaccine seeds will be submitted to Bio Farma for the next stage.
“The progress so far has been more advanced from the side timeline is the Eijkman Institute and the Unair Research Institute conducting research until it is obtained seed vaccine (vaccine seeds) that are ready to be handed over to Bio Farma, “said Bambang when contacted Beritasatu.com, Wednesday (28/4/2021).
Bambang said, Bio Farma will carry out the next development process until the production process becomes a finished vaccine, including conducting preclinical tests on animals.
Then, the next stage is clinical trials phase 1-3 on human subjects in collaboration with a qualified Faculty of Medicine (FK) Good Clinical Practice(GCP) in Indonesia such as FK Unpad, FK UI, FK UGM, and others.
Bambang said, the basic research process was carried out in the Eijkman laboratory and is currently in the trial process at the R&D facility or research and development Bio Farma, then in order to be developed in Industry, the seeds for vaccine candidates must meet the industry criteria for the next stage.
“Later, the Red and White vaccine seeds at Bio Farma will be followed up with a number of stages, including clinical trials which are divided into several phases until an approval for emergency use or EUA (Emergency Use Authorization, ed) is requested to the BPOM (Food and Drug Supervisory Agency, ed. ), “He said.
However, Bambang said, the development of the Red and White vaccine will continue and is targeted to be used en masse as early as the second quarter of 2022.
“If it goes well, the target use of the vaccine is estimated to be the fastest in Q2 in 2022. The Red and White Vaccine can be used by the public after obtaining approval for use from the BPOM, “he said.
