The Railway Authority wants more control over drivers and Czech Railways

“We are monitoring the current situation regarding emergencies very closely. First of all, we will wait for the conclusions of the investigation of the Railway Inspectorate and the Police of the Czech Republic. Finding out the causes will help to analyze the error rate,” said Novák.

According to him, the Office plans an audit in the coming days to weeks, in which it will investigate the work of train drivers and also the conditions in which they work. It will increase inspections compared to the original plans, especially at Czech Railways, and will focus on system security and compliance with conditions. Novák said that the inspectors will work mainly directly in the regional workplaces of train drivers, including those who drove crashed trains. Czech Railways also announced increased inspections of the work of its own drivers on Wednesday.

Due to frequent accidents, a new standing commission for railway safety met on Wednesday evening. It agreed on higher investments in local lines, faster crossing security and the installation of the ETCS safety system. It should cost billions of crowns.

Examination of drivers

At the same time, the Railway Authority is preparing a letter for all domestic carriers, inviting them to carry out their own analysis of the error rate of train drivers, which have led to extraordinary events in the last two years.

In connection with the work of train drivers, the Office prepared a proposal for a new punishment of problem train drivers before the accidents. According to the proposal, drivers who repeatedly do not respect the signals or violate other safety rules will be at risk of suspending or revoking their license. The Office also wants to set up a driver’s license monitoring system to monitor compliance with compulsory rest. Both proposals are now in the legislative process.
