A joint research team composed of the University of Queensland in Australia and Harvard University in the US analyzed 150,000 adults in 29 countries and found that the morbid risk of mental illness by the age of 75 was 46.4% for men and 53.1% (51.9–54.3) for women. The results were published in The Lancet Psychiatry, a psychiatric journal.

The researchers collected data collected through the World Health Organization’s World Mental Health Survey, the largest ever face-to-face interview survey involving more than 150,000 adults aged 18 and over in 29 countries between 2001 and 2022. analyzed the data.

Among the subjects analyzed by the researchers, 85,308 (54.5%) were female and 71,023 (45.4%) were male.

The lifetime prevalence, which is the percentage of people who have experienced at least one mental disorder during their lifetime, was 28.6% for males and 29.8% for females.

Professor John McGrath of the University of Queensland, who led the study, said: “Our analysis showed that 50% of the population will suffer from at least one mental disorder by the age of 75. The most common was a mood disorder such as major depression or anxiety.”

“We also found that the risk of certain mental disorders differs by gender,” he added.

The three most common mental health disorders in women were depression, specific phobias (anxiety that interferes with daily life), and post-traumatic stress disorder (and PTSD).

Men, on the other hand, suffered the most from alcohol abuse, depression and specific phobias.

In addition, the average age of onset of a mental health disorder was 19 years for men and 20 years for women.

“Understanding the age at which mental disorders develop allows us to tailor public health interventions and provide appropriate and timely support to individuals at risk,” McGrath said.
