The prevalence of diabetes in the high risk group for cardiovascular disease and the non-anemia group with anemia

[이데일리 이순용 기자]Research results of Professor Seung-Woon Na’s research team (Professor Seung-Woon Na, Professor Byung-Gol Choi, Research Professor at Korea University’s Cardiovascular Research Center), and patients with anemia in the risk group (elderly, angina, hypertension, coronary artery disease, etc.) The risk of developing diabetes was higher than those who did not.

The research team divided 17,515 patients without diabetes among the risk group for cardiovascular disease who visited Korea University Guro Hospital from January 2004 to February 2013 into anemia (2,907) and non-anemia (14,608) for 5 years. Followed up. As a result, 11.5% (122 people) of the anemia group and 7.9% (456 people) of the non-anemia group developed diabetes, and the incidence of diabetes in the anemia group was 37.3% higher than that of the non-anemia group. In addition, the mortality rate was 3.0% (42 patients) in the anemia group, 4 times higher than 0.8% (52 patients) in the non-anemia group, and the risk of myocardial infarction was also 1.3% (19 patients) in the anemia group, 0.4% ( 29).

Until now, it has been known that anemia occurs very frequently in diabetic patients. However, on the contrary, studies that analyzed the risk of diabetes in anemia patients were rare, and studies on diabetes incidence in the risk group for cardiovascular disease were very limited.

Professor Seung-Woon Na of the Cardiovascular Center of Korea University Guro Hospital said, “Diabetes, known as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, has a great effect on not only quality of life but also long-term survival rate, so diagnosis, management and prevention are one of the very important diseases.” There are many people who think of it as a mild disease. If neglected, it not only increases the risk of developing diabetes, but also puts a strain on the heart and increases the risk of developing heart disease, so careful observation is necessary.”

“Through this study, the more severe anemia symptoms in Koreans with cardiovascular disease risk, the higher the risk of diabetes,” said Choi Byeong-geol, a research professor at Korea University’s Cardiovascular Research Institute. “The symptoms of anemia are very diverse and sometimes asymptomatic. The causative disorder may vary and may have been associated with other disorders. In particular, people with coronary artery disease, high blood pressure patients, and the elderly who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease should ensure that anemia is not overlooked or ignored.”

The study was published online in the international journal’Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology’ on the 19th.
