The outgoing governor avoided the death penalty for 17 defendants

Oregon: Outgoing Governor Katie Brown has spared the death penalty for all 17 of the state’s death row inmates, saying the practice of lethal injection is unethical. Sentenced to life in prison (without parole). The governor signed the order to that effect on December 14.

After taking office as governor in 2015, Katy announced a moratorium on the death penalty. But the death penalty law still exists in the state. After the state’s death penalty law went into effect in 1984, it wasn’t enforced until 1996.

I understand the agony of the family members who lost their lives to the brutality of the accused as they used the power vested in the Governor to avoid the death penalty for 17 people. I also understand the pain of those who have been sentenced to death and have been in prison for years,” the governor said.

Katy Brown, who will remain in office until January 9, 2023, and then Governor Tina Kottak, are of the opinion that a moratorium on the death penalty is needed.
