The Oscars are getting a new category, for best casting. The new award will be presented for the first time in two years, at the 98th edition of the Oscar ceremony in 2026. It will then be the first new statue awarded by the Academy in more than twenty years.
Casting directors work with the director to determine which actors can appear in a film. They have been advocating for their own category since the 1990s.
Janet Yang, president of the Academy that hands out the American film awards, said in a statement that casting directors play a “critical role” in filmmaking. “We are proud that from now on we will give these people the recognition they deserve.”
Best stunt
Another category being advocated for is an award for the best stunt of the year. Including Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick: Chapter 4, is an advocate of this. He is discussing it with the Academy. “They want stunts at the Oscars,” he told entertainment site Comic Book Movie last year. “That’s going to happen.”
This year’s Oscars ceremony, without the award for best casting, is on March 10. The new casting Oscar brings the number of categories to 24.
