The number of murders in the Netherlands rises slightly | inland

The number of homicides increased slightly last year to 126. According to data from Statistics Netherlands, five more people were killed than in 2020.

In particular, men over forty were more victims (+11), fewer young women (-6). One third of all murders were committed in the three largest cities of Amsterdam (15), Rotterdam (15) and The Hague (11). Last year it was a quarter.

More than half of the women had been killed by their (ex) partners. Men are most often killed by strangers. The children under 10 – 31 last year – were almost all killed by their father or mother.

The number of murders has remained stable over the past five years and averages 123. At the beginning of this century it was nearly double. Researchers from the University of Leiden concluded last year that this may be partly explained by the decrease in inequality in society. There also seem to be fewer “contentious killings”. The internet could be the explanation for this. People are more often looking for entertainment behind the screen, which means they are less likely to get into violent conflict. The number of murders in the criminal environment remains virtually the same. This often concerns drug disputes, fraud affairs or liquidations.
