The not-so-stupid question: why is the Vendée coast nicknamed “Côte de Lumière”?

Côte de Nacre, French Riviera, Opal Coast … The different coasts of France benefit from many nicknames, illustration of the variety and richness of its coastline.

In Vendée, the coastline is nicknamed ” Coast of light “. Why such a nickname?

Simply en because of the strong sunshine which benefits the Vendée coast on the Atlantic coast.

A reputation that is not usurped …

On average, we measure more than 2,300 hours of sunshine per year in Les Sables-d’Olonne. For comparison, at Bordeaux, the total duration of sunshine is 2,035 hours on average, according to Meteo France.

A Biarritz, it is 1,890 hours. Brest, meanwhile, it only knows 1,530 hours of sunshine and Vannes 1,940.

… But who is to be put into perspective!

A reputation that deserves to be put into perspective: the Mediterranean coast enjoys sunshine rates much higher than those of the Vendée : of Montpellier at Nice, periods of sunshine vary from 2,650 to 2,900 hours per year.

In addition, the weather is not always good in Vendée. In May 2020, only 306 hours of sun exposure were recorded in the month against 334 in Quimper.
