The new president: Who did Bulgaria choose?

The elections for President and Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria on November 14, 2021 are over. After them, one thing is clear – a runoff is coming up.

Incumbent President Rumen Radev and Prof. Anastas Gerdjikov will face off in a second round next Sunday, November 21st.

The results of the parallel counts conducted by the sociological agencies show that Radev in the first round received just under or just over 50% of the vote. Gerdjikov has a twice lower result. Third is MRF candidate Mustafa Karadayi with about 10 per cent.

But why, even if the official results of the CEC, which are expected in the coming days, show that the current president collects over 50% of the vote, will we still go to the runoff? Because there are two requirements in the Constitution – first, that the candidate has received more than half of the actual votes, and second, that more than half of the voters took part in the voting.

As turnout on November 14 was at a record low, the second condition was not met and required a second round.

Webcafe.bg tracked for you the results of the exit poll and the parallel censuses of the sociological agencies, as well as the first reactions of the candidates. Here is what happened the night after the presidential vote:

21:38 h. President and candidate for a second term Rumen Radev said it was too early to say that the presidential election was scheduled.

According to him, the results of the exit poll of the sociological agencies, which gave him about 50 percent in the first round, give optimism, but in the upcoming runoff on November 21, he and Iliana Yotova will face the “party-organized vote of the status quo cartel.”

He also expressed readiness to hold a debate with Prof. Anastas Gerdjikov, with whom he is scheduled to meet next Sunday in the second round.

21:10 h. Prof. Anastas Gerdjikov commented that his main goal has been achieved – to have a runoff.

The independent presidential candidate, backed by GERB, said in his first comment after the election that there was progress in bridging the gap between him and Rumen Radev at the start of the campaign. He said that according to the exit polls, the difference is about 24% and expressed confidence that he will “melt them too” next week until the runoff.

If the exit polls of the sociological agencies are confirmed, Gerdjikov is second in the race after the current president and the two will face off in a second round on November 21st.

Gerdjikov also commented that according to data he saw, “10-15%” of “other parties” also voted for him.

When asked who will support “Democratic Bulgaria” in the second round, Ivanov said that this will still be decided by the collective bodies of the political force. According to the preliminary results of the exit poll, Rumen Radev and Anastas Gerdjikov are going to the runoff.
