Geneva: The World Health Organization confirmed on Monday that the new strain of the emerging corona virus that appeared in the United Kingdom “is not out of control”, calling for the application of health measures that have proven effective.
“We have recorded a reproduction rate of the virus that greatly exceeds the threshold of 1.5 in different stages of this epidemic, and we were able to control it. Accordingly, the current situation in this sense is not out of control,” WHO’s emergency health cases official Michael Ryan said in a press conference.
These statements are a response to what was announced by British Health Minister Matt Hancock on Sunday, when he considered that “the new strain is out of control.”
“Although the virus has become somewhat more effective at the level of spread, it can be stopped,” Ryan added, stressing that “the measures currently in place are in order. We must continue to do what we have done” until now.
“We might have to do that a little more intensively and for a longer time to make sure we can control this virus,” he added.
Since Sunday, several countries have closed their borders to arrivals from the United Kingdom and South Africa, where the new strain of Covid-19 appeared.
