The murder of Ashling Murphy: – Two men arrested

On Wednesday 12 January, he turned 23 years old Ashling Murphy assaulted and killed as she jogged along the Grand Canal in Cappincur, Ireland.

– The whole country is crushed and shocked after the violent and barbaric murder. In our society, there is no room for violence, especially not violence against women. It can not, and will not, be tolerated, says Prime Minister Micheál Martin.

Irish police have now arrested two men, both in their 30s, on suspicion of killing Murphy. The two men can be questioned for 24 hours, after which they must either be charged or released, according to The Guardian.

One man was arrested on Tuesday, the other was arrested on Wednesday afternoon.

Arrested in hospital

The man who was arrested on Tuesday visited St. James Hospital last Thursday with “serious and suspicious injuries”. The staff quickly alerted the police, who had previously urged all hospitals to notify if they had suspicions in connection with injured patients.

The police monitored the man while he was hospitalized, and waited for health workers to think he was healthy enough to go home. Police arrested the man Tuesday morning.

Prior to the arrest, the police published a picture of a black and green bicycle that they thought could be connected to the perpetrator.

– The police ask for all information about a Falcon Storm mountain bike with straight handlebars and distinctive yellow / green forks, they wrote on Facebook.

DNA collected from the crime scene will be crucial to the investigation. Two houses have been cordoned off for forensic examination.

Due to the ongoing investigation, the police do not want to go out with the cause of death.

In sorrow

The murder of Murphy has shocked the nation. Memorial ceremonies have been held in Dublin, Belfast, London and New York, with tens of thousands of participants.

Like the murder of Sarah Everard in the UK last year, the debate over women’s safety has resurfaced.

Murphy is described as a loving and beautiful person.

Ashling was so much more than a girlfriend. She was my soulmate. She’s my soulmate, she always will be. She’s the big love of my life, says Murphy’s girlfriend.

The murder has also created strong reactions on social media.

– I usually run along the same channel as Ashling Muprhy did. I feel very privileged that I was able to complete my run today, something she will never have the opportunity to do. I thought about her the whole trip, writes a cohabitant on Twitter.
