The Municipality of Rotterdam nevertheless reports the daubing of the Fortuyn statue NOW

The municipality of Rotterdam has reported Monday that the statue of Pim Fortuyn has been damaged on the Korte Hoogstraat in the center of Rotterdam. This is evident from answers from the college on Tuesday (pdf) to written questions from council member Joost Eerdmans (Liveable Rotterdam).

In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the statue was defaced with the word ‘racist’, which was written on the pedestal in white letters. The municipality initially announced that no declaration was made, because there would be no permanent damage and the available camera images were not sufficient enough.

Responsible councilor Bert Wijbenga was told on Friday that the police still see enough leads to start an investigation.

The defacement of the image of the Rotterdam politician Fortuyn, who was shot and killed in 2002 by Volkert van der Graaf, led to outrage in Rotterdam society.

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives unanimously adopted a motion by PVV leader Geert Wilders by stating that defacing Fortuyn’s image is “unacceptable and unacceptable”.

The municipality of Rotterdam has since removed the daubing.
