The Moon Has 2 New Craters From Rocket Hits, How Is That Possible?

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) found two craters in Moon which is thought to have been created by a rocket impact which allegedly occurred on March 4, 2021.

Citing the official site NASAThe two craters discovered by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) consist of one crater in the east with a diameter of 18 meters, and another crater in the west with a size of 16 meters.

The crater in the east overlaps the crater in the west. The appearance of the two craters was unexpected and may indicate the rocket body has a heavy mass at each end.

Usually, the mass of a rocket is centered on the motor. Meanwhile, the rest of the rocket only consists of empty fuel tanks.

Previously, no rocket body had a similar impact on the Moon. The four craters from the Apollo SIV-B rocket (Appolo 13, 14, 15, 17) are irregular in shape and larger (over 35 meters) than the two craters.

Meanwhile, the maximum width of the two mysterious craters is not much different from the crater from SIV-B.

Furthermore, LRO is managed by the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, which is under the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

The LRO was launched on June 18, 2009 and has amassed a vast treasure trove of data with its seven powerful instruments capable of making an invaluable contribution to knowledge about the Moon.

NASA itself is returning to the Moon with commercial and international partners to widen the human presence in space and bring back science and opportunity.

Partner with Space X

For the mission to the Moon, NASA partnered with Elon Musk’s Space X. NASA involved Space X in the Artemis mission with the target of bringing two United States (US) astronauts to the Moon.

“At least one of the two astronauts will make history as the first woman to land on the Moon. Other targets of the Artemis program include landing the first people of color on the surface of the Moon,” NASA wrote on its official website.

In addition to the Moon, NASA is also partnering with Space X regarding the procurement of aircraft that will transport astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). The plan, NASA will buy five aircraft made by Space X.

Collect Space, the contract is reportedly worth about $ 3.5 billion dollars and was agreed in February for an additional three astronaut missions. They will depart on Falcon 9 rockets and Dragon capsules: Crew-7, Crew-8, and Crew-9.
