The military did not support: how the president caused riots in Peru in an attempt to keep power

Impeachment of the president, protests and clashes with consequent loss of life. This is how last week passed in Peru. In 2020, this South American country had three presidents in five days. As we can see now, overcoming this turbulence was only a short break before the next political crisis.

In June 2021, Pedro Castillo became president of Peru, who remained in office for just over a year – last week he was removed by impeachment. Even before his suspension, Castillo was accused of corruption. He has also been criticized for inefficient state administration.

Hours before lawmakers began debating Castillo’s impeachment, the president gave a televised speech announcing his dismissal of Congress. “We have made the decision to declare a state of emergency,” he said.

This move was doomed to further failure, as it quickly became clear that the military, the police and Castillo’s own cabinet were not ready to support the ex-president’s ambitious (his opponents would say – rebellious) intentions.
