The Medical Association supports the demands of educators and will take part in a protest against the government

“Given that many health professionals are also university lecturers and researchers, it is our duty to support educators’ efforts to achieve fair remuneration for all those working in the sector. Since the last protests in the healthcare sector, LĀB and LIZDA have been united by close cooperation, therefore with the participation of doctors in this picket we want to reaffirm the solidarity of two most important sectors in Latvia and the maturity of Latvian civil society, ”emphasizes Ilze Aizsilniece.

Already in the spring, LĀB and LIZDA, as well as other health care and education professional organizations, jointly addressed an open letter to the highest state officials, requesting adequate funding in order to provide more modern and inclusive education, as well as accessible and patient-oriented health care. The letter reminded that in everyday life and during an emergency, educators and doctors perform their duties professionally and honestly, calling on politicians to perform their duties with equal responsibility, complying with the laws in force in Latvia.

LIZDA will wait for the meeting of the ruling coalition on Monday, August 17, and it will decide on raising the salaries of university teachers, and only then will it decide whether or not to hold a teacher picket, said trade union leader Inga Vanaga after meeting with Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (JV).

Vanaga pointed out that the Prime Minister supports the allocation of funding for this purpose, however, LIZDA remains concerned about the provision of money in next year’s and medium-term budget.

LĀB was founded in 1988 and its goal is to improve the Latvian health care system and the qualification of doctors, protect the legal, professional and economic interests of doctors, promote public health, improve the organization of health care and improve the medical education system, as well as popularize and control. The association cooperates with the Lithuanian Medical Association, the Estonian Medical Association, the Baltic and German Medical Association. LĀB is a member of WMA (World Medical Association), CPME (European Permanent Medical Commission) and UEMS (European Medical Specialists Association). LĀB representatives participate in Saeima commission meetings in drafting laws, discussing draft laws, submitting proposals and recommendations. The association also cooperates with the Ministry of Health in the development of various draft regulatory enactments that closely affect professional issues. LĀB members and board members work in the Strategic Council of the Ministry of Health and in the Institution of Chief Specialists. The Association cooperates with other medical professional organizations: the Latvian Association of Young Doctors, the Latvian Nurses’ Association, the Latvian Pharmacists’ Association, the Latvian Association of Medical Professionals and patients’ organizations.
