Thanks to a mechanism that allows the new coronavirus to mask its cells in the form of cellular compounds, it manages to enter an organism without alerting the body’s protective systems, reveal American scientists to the scientific journal Nature Communications.

Scientists at the University of Texas at San Antonio have unveiled the means by which the new coronavirus manages without difficulty to penetrate into the cells, without causing the activation of the immune system, relates an article published in Nature Communications. To do this, it disguises its own molecules as cellular compounds.
The nsp16 enzyme turns out to play a key role in contamination of a cell. It changes the cap at the end of messenger RNAs, which are used as intermediates by cells for protein synthesis.
Penetration Mechanism
For its part, the cap has many functions, notably that of protecting RNA against degradation and that of regulating the transport of RNA between the nucleus and the ribosomes. Due modification of the messenger RNA cap, the cell cannot recognize a foreign molecule and sees it as one of its own components, the researchers say.
The decryption of the 3D structure of the nsp16 enzyme will allow the development of effective antivirals for the treatment of Covid-19 that will prevent the modification of the caps, conclude the authors of the study.
