The raising of the contactless payment ceiling from 30 to 50 euros was already under consideration, but the Covid-19 epidemic has accelerated discussions between French banks, decision makers in the matter.
This ceiling will rise from 30 to 50 euros from May 11, announced on Thursday April 16, the French Banking Federation (FBF), confirming information from Europe 1. This increase in the ceiling “Is now possible”, said the president of the FBF, Frédéric Oudéa, in a statement.
Some have indeed argued that this method of payment reduces the possibility of contamination compared to a payment by bank card requiring typing its code on a keyboard or handling cash.
For the same reason, around twenty European countries had announced at the end of March the raising of their contactless payment ceilings, most often to 50 euros.
Industrial preparation
If the change will not take effect until May 11, it is because such an operation requires a “Heavy and delicate IT industrialization” that can not “To be done overnight, in a rush, without risking destabilizing a system that works well, especially in the delicate context of this coronavirus”, explained last week the grouping of bank cards.
“The implementation proves that the banks are continuously mobilized in this crisis to meet the needs of their customers”, welcomed Frédéric Oudéa.
