The Kremlin stepped up its crackdown on civil society

Blinken added that the Russian government is trying to keep its citizens in the dark about the atrocities it is committing against the people of Ukraine.

In the fourth month of Russia’s full-scale invasion of the territory of independent Ukraine, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken wished the Russians on Russia Day live without repression.

This was reported in an appeal to the Russians on State Department website.

“Russian citizens, like people around the world, deserve to live without reprisals and be able to enjoy their human rights and fundamental freedoms without fear of retribution… The Kremlin has stepped up its crackdown on civil society and independent media. Too many Russian citizens are behind bars for the ‘crime’ of telling the authorities the truth about the actions of their government,” he said.

Blinken stressed that this includes being able to speak your mind and peacefully participate in civic and political activities in your country.

Blinken added that the Russian government is trying to keep its citizens in the dark about the atrocities it is committing against the people of Ukraine.

According to the Secretary of State, the Kremlin’s war left Russia in international isolation and deprives Russian citizens of the opportunity to build a better future in harmony with their neighbors.

War in Ukraine and Blinken’s position:

On 27 May Blinken stated that Putin failed to reach none of its strategic goals. Instead of destroying Ukraine’s independence, he strengthened it. Instead of dividing NATO, he united it. Instead of confirming the strength of Russia, he undermines it. And instead of weakening the international order, he united nations to defend it.

On June 1, Anthony Blinken, at a joint conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, said that Russia could even tomorrow stop the war but there are no signs of this.
