Jakarta: Preeclampsia can cause serious complications and even fatal for the mother and baby if not treated immediately. Unfortunately, preeclampsia is difficult to detect, so it is often too late to treat it.

Preeclampsia is a major cause of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity in Indonesia. Called “The Silent Killer” because many of its symptoms resemble the common complaints of pregnancy.

Dr. Aditya Kusuma, SpOG as the Obstetrician Specialist at RSIA Bunda explained, preeclampsia has caused at least 76,000 deaths in pregnant mother and 500,000 fetuses worldwide. Complications This is usually characterized by high blood pressure, which can lead to complications, including damage to vital organs, especially the kidneys and liver.

“Preeclampsia can cause serious and even fatal complications for both mother and baby, if not treated immediately. Unfortunately, the diagnosis of preeclampsia is sometimes missed because many of its symptoms are masked by common pregnancy complaints such as swollen feet, headaches or nausea,” said dr. Aditya, in the media discussion ‘Early Detection of Preeclampsia to Reduce the Risk of Maternal and Fetal Death’, Tuesday, 12 October 2021.

According to dr. Aditya, the symptoms of preeclampsia are not felt in early pregnancy and are only seen when entering 20 weeks of gestation. Thus, many pregnant women are late in getting the right treatment when their preeclampsia condition has endangered the mother and fetus.

“Preeclampsia has various risks to the mother and fetus in the short or long term, for example premature delivery, low birth weight of the baby, placental abruption, seizures that can develop into eclampsia, and potentially lead to death,” continued Dr. Aditya.

Early detection of preeclampsia is something that needs to be considered early in pregnancy. Where, pregnant women can now access preeclampsia testing through blood tests at various hospitals and laboratories.

One of the innovations for detecting preeclampsia is a blood test using the biomarker sFlt-1/PlGF which can now predict the possibility of preeclampsia in pregnancy, even from the first trimester of pregnancy.

Of course, the earlier the condition of preeclampsia can be predicted, the doctors and pregnant women can provide faster and more appropriate treatment.
