For the first time, Kuwaiti women will be able to enlist in the army after fighting for years, they were limited to civilian functions, the army reported, Nova TV reported.

Defense Minister Hamad Jaber al-Ali al-Sabah said the door was open for women to join various military ranks, including as officers, the Kuwaiti Armed Forces said.

“The time has come for Kuwaiti women to be given the opportunity to join the Kuwaiti army side by side with their brothers,” the minister said in a comment issued by the state news agency KUNA.

Kuwaiti women received the right to vote in 2005 and actively participate in the cabinet and parliament, although they did not win seats in the current parliament.

Unlike other Gulf countries, the Kuwaiti parliament has legislative power and lawmakers are known to challenge the government and royalty.
