The Key to Longevity: Genetics, Diet, and Physical Exercise

What determines each person’s longevity is genetics, it’s a fact, but care with diet and physical exercise can influence the quality of life and even increase life expectancy.

Since we cannot influence our genes, we can invest in healthy eating and regular activities that can easily be incorporated into our daily routine.

In Okinawa, one of the blue zones on the planet with the highest life expectancy, the 80% law is practiced, which says that anyone can enjoy food and stop eating when they feel full and, in addition, many inhabitants older people, especially fishermen, work until they can and are adept at martial arts and tai chi.

On the Nicoya Peninsula, in Costa Rica, the centuries-old inhabitants do not know how to be sedentary and do not stop walking several kilometers a day, chopping firewood or doing household chores, while in Sardinia shepherds over 100 years old continue to rise and descend mountains with their flocks.

All these examples just show that, wherever in the world, one of the biggest factors for longer-lived people to feel and stay young is physical activity.

According to Valter Longo, a renowned biochemist and specialist in research into aging and age-related diseases, the ideal exercise for health and longevity is “the one we prefer, but also the one we can easily incorporate into our daily lives and continue to do until the age of 100 or more” he says in an interview with Telva.

The expert suggests 3 simple exercises that we can do every day:

. A quick walk for one hour a day, which can be incorporated into the daily routine, such as walking a route that is usually done by car;

. Cycling, running or swimming every two days for 30-40 minutes, preferably in contact with nature, but it can also be in an enclosed space such as a municipal swimming pool or covered tracks;

. Strength training once or twice a week, at the gym or at home, because muscles need to be stimulated to stay strong and stimulated.
