JAKARTA – With the establishment of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) by the President on April 28, 2021, National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) will be gradually integrated into the National Agency for Research and Innovation as the Implementing Organization for Research and Development (OPL).
This integration together with 3 other institutions, namely the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), and the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN).

Founded in 1963, LAPAN itself has had a long history of progress in Indonesia. Not only as a Litbangjirap institution but also as an Indonesian Space Agency which has authority in the field of aerospace and space in Indonesia.
The head of LAPAN, Thomas Djamaluddin, revealed about the position of LAPAN as a space agency after the existence of BRIN, that EIGHT as an R&D institution, it will be integrated into the National Agency for Research and Innovation in accordance with Article 48 paragraph 1 of the Science and Technology Sinas Law.
BRIN, which is under and responsible to the President, will act as the ‘Space Operating Institution’ in accordance with Article 38 of the Space Law.
“So later, what is meant by this ‘institution’ in the Space Law, is no longer EIGHT but BRIN. In the future, BRIN will delegate the task of technical space functions to the ‘EIGHT Research Organizations’, “said Thomas.

“Aspects of policy and regulation will later coordinate BRIN, of course with input from EIGHT , “He added.
The journey of the Indonesia Space Agency began in 1962, to be precise 13 May 1962 with the formation of the Astronautics Committee by the First Minister of the Republic of Indonesia, Juanda, as Chair of the Indonesian Aviation Council, and RJ Salatun, as the Secretary of the Indonesian Aviation Council.
Then, launching from the official LAPAN Instagram account, Tuesday (18/5/2021), on September 22, 1962, the Early Military and Scientific Rocket Project (PRIMA) affiliated with the Air Force and ITB was formed. PRIMA succeeded in making and launching two series of Kartika rockets.
As mentioned earlier, LAPAN was established on November 27, 1963 through Presidential Decree No. 236 of 1963 concerning LAPAN. Then rules were made in Presidential Decree No. 18/1974 on LAPAN.
In 1988, EIGHT again given the legal umbrella of Presidential Decree Number 33 of 1988 concerning LAPAN. Then Presidential Decree Number 24 of 1994 concerning Amendments to Presidential Decree Number 33 of 1988 concerning LAPAN.
