The Journey of Anna Przybylska: From Cinema Success to Netflix Collaboration

The film about Anna Przybylska, who passed away after a long battle with illness in 2014, has finally seen the light of day after many years of efforts. Last year’s premiere of “Ania” touched viewers all over Poland and, after achieving cinema success, it was released on TVP streaming services. Over time, the creators and family decided to make the production more accessible to the star’s fans and started cooperation with Netflix.

“The project started 7 years ago. The directors – Michał Bandurski and Krystian Kuczkowski – sent Jarek [Jarosława Bieniuka – przyp.red.] an e-mail with a proposal to make this film. The first meeting took place over three years ago – it was made very clear that one of the conditions for even thinking about its creation was that the entire family, i.e. Ania’s mother, sister, Jarek and children, had an influence on it. “what kind of movie it will be,” reports the ShowNews website, quoting a person close to the actress’s family.

The family immediately assumed that they would provide the directors with many materials that had previously only been available for their viewing. Sharing their memories with the world carried risks, so they wanted to oversee the filmmaking process.

“It was known that a large part of the production would consist of private archives, so the family wanted to have an influence even more. It was a joint work in which everyone would arrange something with Ania. Some said goodbye, others, like Cezary Pazura, had the opportunity to say something , which Ania didn’t have time to convey. Everyone closed something this way,” the informant explained.

It turns out that Anna Przybylska’s relatives carefully reviewed each frame of the film and decided whether it was suitable for showing to the public. Together, they wanted to show the world what Przybylska was like in their eyes when she came home from work in the spotlight.

“Everyone could review and authorize their materials, but there was no need to do so, because these were very discreet, normal questions. There was no controversy or sensationalism. The point was not to censor the film, but to create it together. When we saw “Ania” for the first time at a closed screening, we all cried. We expected a film about dying, about cancer, because it is the most clicky topic, but it is not. It was important for Krystyna Przybylska, Ania’s mother, that it was her Anka “It was also important that anyone who sees this film takes something for themselves after the screening, so that they can see what is important in life,” the informant said.
