The Joint Influenza and Covid Vaccination Campaign for 2023-24 Season: Start Date and Recommendations

The vaccination campaign for this 2023-24 season will be joint against influenza and covid 19. This has been confirmed by the Public Health Commission, which has already announced when it will begin. Likewise, the institution has also agreed to recommend immunization against the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), which causes bronchiolitis, for at-risk babies up to six months.

This will be the third campaign in which flu and Covid injections will be administered together. An initiative that coincides with the increase in coronavirus cases that has been experienced in recent weeks in the country.

When does the vaccination campaign start?

This year, vaccination has been brought forward to the end of September. Specifically, it will start the week of the 25th and will be available throughout the month of October. Although the Public Health Commission, which represents the autonomous communities and the Ministry of Health, indicates indicative deadlines. Therefore, each regional government will set its own exact vaccination dates.

In this sense, Health recommends vaccination against both viruses for those over 60 years of age, people over five years of age in nursing homes and disability centers, and those under 60 years of age in risk conditions, such as diabetes, cancer or kidney disease, pregnant women and those who have just given birth, cohabitants of immunosuppressed people, staff in public and private health and social health centers (except students for whom only flu vaccination is recommended) and service workers essential publics.

While the RSV vaccine is established for babies up to six months and those who appear to be at risk, such as those born prematurely under 35 weeks, with severe immunosuppression, with Down syndrome or in palliative care.

Despite the rebound in covid, what is clear is that the symptoms are much milder than during the pandemic. Therefore, its side effects are often confused with that of a normal cold. When in doubt, health authorities always recommend going to a medical professional or taking an antigen test, which can be purchased at any pharmacy.
