It looks like a farce, a tale, a sci-fi movie in turquoise waters. Yet “The Incredible History of Rose Island” tells a true story. This Italian comedy available on Netflix stars Giorgio, a wacky and dreamy Italian engineer. After having piloted a plane without a license, then built a curious motorized machine, the young man suddenly has a brilliant idea: he wants to build an island off Rimini, on the Adriatic coast.
With steel tubes and money from an unscrupulous friend, Giorgio built a 400 m² platform in international waters, which he had recognized as an independent state. A freedom-loving anarchist, Giorgio endows his “Republic” with his own flags and language. But the story takes place in 1968, and the Isle of the Rose becomes above all a gigantic nightclub (and day) in the open sky. The place attracts party-goers by boatloads, and pregnant women can’t always name who is responsible for their condition. Very quickly, the Italian state took it upon itself to destroy the island …
Inspired by the experience of engineer Giorgio Rosa, this comedy with vintage postcard decorations exudes a tasty taste of utopia. And even a little touch of romanticism… Original, funny and lively, the film is carried by Elio Germano, seen in “Suburra” or “Romanzo criminale”. “The Incredible History of the Isle of the Rose” also offers a lovely score to the lovely Matilda de Angelis, featured in the series “The Undoing”. And we meet François Cluzet, at the turn of very funny scenes, in the role of an eccentric bureaucrat.
