The Importance of Speaking Out for Growth and Happiness: Insights from the Icheon Forum

At the four-day forum, heated discussions were held on the methodology for enhancing the growth and happiness of members and the advancement of the management system.

At the Icheon Forum, SK Chairman Chey Tae-won emphasized ‘deep change’ (fundamental innovation) and the active speaking of opinions (Speak-Out) by members as the starting point for happiness.

Chairman Chey Tae-won concluded the forum with a conversation with the members on the 24th and said, “Deep change does not happen overnight. It emphasized that speak out, the key keyword of this year’s Icheon Forum, is the starting point and driving force of management innovation.

Speak out is the word Chairman Chey Tae-won requested the most during his 100 happy talks with members in 2019. Chairman Chey believes that only when members actively speak out can the right direction of innovation be found and the growth and happiness of members can be guaranteed.

Chairman Choi also expressed his opinion, saying, “It is necessary to find out what kind of changes members want through the Icheon Forum and reflect them in the process of deriving management tasks for the CEO Seminar to be held in October.” He continued, “The world is changing so fast that the growth formula of the past does not work for companies, and it is difficult to find a set answer for individual growth methods.” Those who seek out can be recognized for their value.”

Regarding ‘Customer Story’, a topic of the forum, Chairman Choi said, “Customers will leave if you don’t create a story to continue the relationship.” It is important to create,” he emphasized.

This year’s Icheon Forum, held for four days from the 21st, covered ▲innovation of working methods ▲securing future capabilities of members ▲evaluation and compensation ▲customer stories ▲globalization ▲improvement of communication between the board of directors and members. In the working style innovation session, the results of experiments were presented showing that flexible working hours contributed to happiness, productivity, communication and collaboration, and increased sense of belonging. About 200 people from 14 teams from 8 affiliates participated in this experiment and designed their own working hours and spaces.

In the employment stability session, members discussed ways to build an infrastructure that can develop future capabilities to solve new problems in an uncertain business environment such as changes in business structure. The Icheon Forum, a knowledge management platform representing SK Group, started out as an executive learning forum, but expanded into a collective intelligence platform in which members also participate as an untact method was added during the COVID-19 era.

As a result, the participation of members steadily increased from 300 in 2017 to 9,000 in 2020 and 17,000 in 2022. This year, an average of thousands of people participated in each of the 15 pre-learning courses, and they improved their understanding by learning 44,000 hours on a cumulative basis. In the closing session, in which Chairman Chey Tae-won participated, 2,600 people logged on and 10,000 comments and questions were poured out, and members were enthusiastic about participating.

The board of directors also actively communicated with members through the Icheon Forum. About 110 directors from six subsidiaries met with members at a pre-sub-forum to share opinions on board-centered management and strengthening the implementation of the ‘governance story’. An SK official said, “The voices of the members gathered at the Icheon Forum will serve as a catalyst for accelerating the practice of ‘deep change'” and “we will design the best plan for each organization and actively implement it.”
