The Importance of Energy Efficiency in Norwegian Homes and Buildings

(The online newspaper): We Norwegians are world champions in redecorating, but now we also have to think energy-wise.

– The big question is knowing what you have to do to get a good “classification”, says managing director Grete Meier at Privatmegleren to Nettavisen.

A new EU directive is entering Norwegian houses and buildings at full speed, with the grade scale AG, where A is the best. A good “energy rating” means that your home uses little energy and has little greenhouse gas emissions.

Everyone in energy class F and G must be raised one grade. In 2050, all buildings must be zero-emission.

Have renovated it myself: – Extremely difficult

– Few people understand what is needed. We have renovated my house now, and I guess we are at a “C level”, i.e. in the middle of the tree. Those who manage to get to “A-level” are engineers with cutting-edge expertise in all possible “tricks”, where you manage to save and have understood how to insulate everything.

In other words, very few of us:

– So here we need to get much clearer rules and frameworks, so we know what needs to be done.

As many as 28.5 percent have energy grade G in Norway, only 0.82 of Norwegian homes have energy class A. according to Enova.

– You are what we call an “expert”, and yet it is so difficult?

– Yes, it is extremely difficult! It is almost impossible to manage to get an “A”; then district heating, heat pumps, solar cells, insulation, special windows – as well as all possible tricks that save light and heat in all rooms.

– This is not possible to achieve without being “completely special”, says Meier.

– Saves electricity

– How important is it to achieve a classification of “A”?

– I wouldn’t say it is that important, but what is important is that we need more energy. Also in industry. Therefore, we must take action everywhere. Getting more energy-efficient homes means that we save electricity and money. Bonus is also a home that is more comfortable to live in.

She believes many people should say they are satisfied with managing an upgrade, for example to level “C”.

– Then we have made a huge effort for our country by saving energy, while at the same time we live better.

– Better labeling

According to Meier, we need tariffs that give a much clearer indication of what constitutes energy leaks in houses.

– Thus, those of us who work in the housing market can help home owners and sellers in a completely different way than today.

The EU therefore requires that energy consumption goes down into the building mass. It is expected that the Enøk negotiations will be ready by Christmas.

Meier fears most how we will follow the directive if we do not receive clearer instructions.

She is also quite clear that motivation, help and subsidies from the authorities are needed here in order for us to reach our goal.

Compares with electric cars: – Must get traction assistance

– What do you think, is it too expensive today to install good, energy-efficient solutions in Norwegian homes?

– Yes, today it is too expensive! We have to look at whether subsidies or VAT exemptions should be introduced, I don’t care so much whether you cut taxes or give subsidies, because it ultimately goes into the same pot. But we need help, just like the electric cars got in their time.

– But this is much more expensive than looking at the car market, adds Meier quickly.
