The attack by the Palestinian Islamist group “Hamas” on Israel will create the most significant terrorist threat to the United States since the rise of the “Islamic State” a decade ago, FBI chief Christopher Wray said at a congressional hearing, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
Ray said that since the beginning of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza, several foreign terrorist organizations have called for attacks against Americans and against the West, greatly increasing the threat of violence from extremists radicalized on US soil. “The actions of Hamas and its allies will provoke sympathies that we have not seen since the Islamic State declared the establishment of a so-called caliphate years ago,” Ray added. The FBI chief participated in a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing focused on threats to the United States.
Since the outbreak of the conflict in Gaza, the American government has observed an increase in threats to Jews, Muslims and Americans of Arab origin, notes the Associated Press. This week, the White House expressed concern over reports of anti-Semitic incidents at American universities. Tensions between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups have risen on some American campuses, including in New York, prompting university officials to tighten security measures at higher education institutions.
“The hatred directed at Jewish students, communities and institutions is fueling already high levels of anti-Semitism in the United States and around the world,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said at a congressional hearing today. Meanwhile, US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced today at a White House meeting that he has ordered the Justice Department to cooperate with Israeli investigators looking into financial flows, including cryptocurrency, to Hamas.
