The Impact of Bad Habits on Spine Health: Crossing Legs, Crossing Legs, and Walking with Arms Crossed

As the saying goes, ‘A habit at age 3 lasts until 80’, once a habit is established, it is not easy to change. Bad habits are hard to break, and if you keep them for a long time, they harm your health. Crossing legs, cross-legged legs, and eight-legged walking, which people unconsciously repeat, may feel comfortable right away, but they are representative bad habits that harm the spine.

People who sit cross-legged tend to cross their legs in only one direction all the time. When this happens, the pelvis connected to the leg rises only on one side, and the pelvis is distorted. In the case of women, if the skirt keeps turning to one side while walking, it is because the pelvis is twisted.

The so-called ‘single-legged’ posture, in which you inadvertently support your weight on only one leg, is also a posture that puts strain on your back and spine. Standing on one leg for a long time can cause some of the spinal muscles to stretch and weaken, leading to scoliosis in which the spine curves.

A normal spine has a ‘1’ shape when viewed from the front or back, and an ‘S’ shape when viewed from the side. Scoliosis refers to a symptom in which the spine curves in an ‘S’ shape when viewed from the front. After identifying the individual’s condition, scoliosis is improved through exercise/corrective treatment, braces, and surgery. Above all, making a habit of living in the right posture in everyday life is a good way to prevent scoliosis and prevent it from getting worse.

If you have a habit of walking cross-legged, you need to check if you are walking in a straight line. When you sit cross-legged, the muscles on the inside of the thighs are stretched and the muscles on the outside are united. If this habit persists, the ‘O’-shaped legs will naturally form and the feet will naturally walk. Walking with legs wide apart is an act of unconsciously finding stability in the legs due to a weak waist. It naturally puts a burden on the back, leading to back pain, and if it persists, it is highly likely to develop into a herniated disc and spinal stenosis.

Spinal stenosis is a disease that occurs when the spinal canal narrows and compresses the nerve root, and it usually appears in the late 40s. If the usual bad posture continues, it can develop early. In the early stages of symptoms, symptoms can be alleviated by restricting movement, resting, and taking medications such as anti-inflammatory painkillers and muscle relaxants and conservative treatment. If there is no improvement with conservative treatment, surgery should be performed.

It is necessary to consciously maintain an upright posture. It is also good to avoid the habit of sleeping on your stomach. When you sleep on your stomach, your hips and spine rise upward and your lower back sinks downward. In this case, it puts pressure on the lower back, causing neck, shoulder, and back pain. Likewise, reading a book or watching TV in a prone position is also a bad habit.

Kwon Jong-kyu, director of the Spine Center at Seoul Yes Hospital (neurosurgeon), said, “Prevention is more important than anything else to avoid surgery. It is important to make it a habit to maintain.”
