European ambassadors and analysts are making “pilgrimages” to Trump’s allies to find out his true intentions.
There is growing concern among European countries that if Donald Trump wins the 2024 US presidential election, Washington will effectively withdraw from NATO. Currently, ambassadors of European states, as well as employees of think tanks, are seeking contacts with Trump’s associates in order to find out his true intentions and plans regarding the North Atlantic Alliance.

The material notes that the possible withdrawal of the United States from NATO if Trump wins is hinted at by his election program, in which the ex-president promises to complete the process begun during his first term, “the process of reassessing the tasks and purpose of the Alliance.”
While some diplomats are making “pilgrimages” to Trump’s associates, Finnish Ambassador Mikko Hautala directly addressed the ex-president and tried to convince him of the importance of Finland for the North Atlantic Alliance, the publication notes.
According to the newspaper, several former and current diplomats warned their governments that Trump, if he returned to the presidency, could not only refuse military assistance to Ukraine, but also leave Europe in general without an American military presence.
It should be noted that during his presidency, Trump repeatedly criticized NATO members for allegedly paying too little to the Alliance’s treasury. For example, in 2019, he called on allies to double their contributions to the bloc’s budget – from 2% of each country’s GDP to 4%.
Let us remind you that a recent pre-election poll by The Wall Street Journal showed that Trump is ahead of Biden by 4%: 47% of respondents are now ready to vote for the potential Republican candidate, and 43% for the current president.
