The household contents insurers with the greatest loss of premiums

February 24, 2021 – From 2014 to 2019, Alte Leipziger, Ergo, HDI, Helvetia and Janitos recorded declines in premiums. The remaining 45 of the 50 largest players increased the premium volume according to the “Industry Monitor 2014-2019: Household Insurance” from VERS Leipzig. The strongest growth in absolute terms – due to the merger – was Generali Deutschland. In percentage terms, the Ammerländer grew the most.

The premium income in the associated household insurance has risen sharply in recent years. While things only went up slightly at the beginning of the period under review, the annual growth since 2014 has been continuously above the two percent mark. Five providers with declining premiums

When looking at the development of premium income at company level, huge differences become clear. The premium income fell at five companies between 2014 and 2019.

This group includes the HDI Insurance AG, the Alte Leipziger Versicherung AG, the Ergo Insurance AG, the Helvetia Swiss Insurance Company AG, Directorate for Germany and the Janitos Insurance AG. The aforementioned players collected between 4.5 (HDI) and 0.2 million euros (Janitos) less in 2019 than in 2014.

This is shown by the “Industry Monitor 2014-2019: Household Insurance”. The study is carried out annually by the VERS Leipzig GmbH, now in cooperation with Sirius Campus GmbH, carried out. It contains overviews of numerous key figures of the 50 largest providers in the sector with around 90 percent market share.

According to the publication, only the Alte Leipziger showed a continuous downward curve. After initial growth, HDI, Helvetia and Janitos only recorded declines towards the end of the period under review. Ergo recently returned to growth.
