“The Hidden History of New York’s Nickname: The Big Apple”

Several major cities have nicknames. Generally, they are all quite easy to decode. Las Vegas is nicknamed Sin City because it is the city of vice.

Chicago is called Windy City because its location on the shores of Great Lake Michigan makes it a windy destination. Paris the city of lights, Rome the eternal city, Montreal the city of a hundred steeples…

But New York’s nickname, The Big Apple, or The Big Apple, is less obvious. Where is that from?

The origins have long been rather vague. Now we know.
